Created and maintained by Dance/USA, the National Company Roster is a listing of professional tax-exempt dance companies located in the United States or a U.S. territory (the "NCR" or "Roster"). In existence for over two decades, the NCR is regularly updated through review of Internal Revenue Service data, including Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N filings made available by GuideStar and the National Center for Charitable Statistics, through review of dance-related literature and other written materials, discussions with dancemakers, and through the self-identification of professional tax-exempt dance companies to Dance/USA. An updated NCR is posted to the Dance/USA website on an annual basis, with financial information based on the two most recently publicly available Form 990s.
The NCR has undergone several expansions in recent years due to changes in the criteria for inclusion (see below). Most of these changes have concerned the lowering of budgetary thresholds. In January 2016, Dance/USA launched a major expansion of the NCR to render this listing of dance companies more reflective of the scale and diversity of U.S. professional nonprofit dance (the "Expansion Project"). Currently in development, the NCR now tracks all professional federally or tribally registered tax-exempt U.S. dance companies, regardless of budget size, and fiscally sponsored dance activity.
To be included on the new NCR, a dance company or group must possess the following characteristics:
Dance/USA anticipates that the expanded NCR will be available for public dissemination in 2017.
The 2015 NCR covers known 501(c)(3) dance companies with expense budgets of $100,000 or greater for the fiscal years ending in 2013 and/or 2012. There are 405 listings on the 2015 NCR.
The 2015 NCR is also available in .xls (Microsoft Excel) format. Please contact the director of research and information services to request a copy.
Dance/USA frequently adds new companies/groups to the NCR. If your organization matches the characteristics listed above, please send an email to the director of research and information services and include the following:
