Dance Exchange Summer Institute 2013

Dance Exchange has long been known for bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to move, create, collaborate, ask questions and engage in dialogue. Using the body as a resource to understand and investigate across disciplines, we can ask the big questions and delight in the meandering paths created by the pursuit of the answers.

Whether you are a dancer starting a professional career, a writer looking to expand your craft, an established choreographer, an activist, or just interested in trying out a new creative process this summer, this 10-day institute is a place of true exchange. The Institute culminates in a public performance of a new work created in collaboration with DX artists and participants at American Dance Institute in Rockville, MD on a program of work by DX and local artists.

During the institute, each day will begin with class to warm up the body and mind for a day of dance-making. Through set material and improvisation, solo and group explorations, participants utilize their bodies as a tool to research and express ideas, and expand their range as articulate, efficient movers. After class, we explore methods for generating and crafting movement for building dances and building community. Artistic Director, Cassie Meador and Resident Artists will share their methods, tools from the Dance Exchange Toolbox, and will invite you to share your ways of working. In the afternoon, we will create and rehearse a new work. Using a highly collaborative process, participants will experience the way the company works to develop movement, text, and song into a cohesive performance work.

Throughout the Institute, ample opportunities will be provided to discuss community art-making, and to learn more about the company through conversation and video showings. Participants will also learn Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process during the Institute. $750 for a 10-day experience.
