Strategic Reframing Process

Dance/USA is in the midst of a Strategic Reframing Process.

What does this mean?

It means that we are engaging in a multi-year process of assessment, listening, exploration, and dreaming to gain a better understanding of what it means to be in humble service to the dance ecosystem, and how Dance/USA might evolve to meet the needs of the ecosystem – in ways the organization is uniquely positioned to do.

This work is both reflective and aspirational. It is reflective of moments in our history when the organization has fallen short of being truly inclusive or equitable. It also embraces our aspirations for a future structure that supports members of the dance community in ways that are deeply meaningful, while remaining realistic and practicable for our team.

We understand that our dance community is simultaneously grappling with tectonic shifts in the overall funding landscape, and living with uncertainty in federal, regional, and local arts policies. That’s a lot to manage, and the element of surprise doesn’t help…

We anticipate that the programs and resources Dance/USA currently provides will shift as a result of this work, and so we are committed to sharing key learnings with you as we move through the rest of this process.

What have we done so far? We’ve collected meaningful data, through:

  • A nationwide survey of our member community
  • A nationwide survey of the entire dance ecosystem
  • A number of virtual gatherings

Here are our key takeaways:

The following emerged as top needs from our three sets of data—

  • Advocacy resources for basic needs, funding, and financial support
  • Connection and convening opportunities that center networking, relationship-building, and mentorship
  • Professional development, including financial and business training, marketing and fundraising training, legal and licensing services, and more
  • Cultural inclusion and expansion of dance, including awareness of cultural nuance, increased representation of cultural heritages, inclusive and updated notions of aesthetics and genres, and an expanded definition of dance—its purpose and value

What’s next?

As of March 2025, we are entering a phase of decision-making in order to update our operations and systems to align the needs of our dance community with the assets and strengths of our organization.

At Dance/USA, we are dedicated to ensuring that dance is a powerful, thriving, and essential part of our nation’s cultural landscape. Our advocacy initiatives are central to this mission.

These efforts include:

  • Policy Advocacy: Working with lawmakers to secure funding and support for the dance ecosystem
  • Research and Data Collection: Collecting, analyzing, and presenting research that is national in scope and provides invaluable data to its members, the press, and the public.
  • Policy Awareness: Sharing timely updates with our community on federal policies that affect our sector.

And, after hearing from Dance/USA members and the greater dance ecosystem, we are now implementing new initiatives to address the critical need for our community’s voice to be heard and equip you with the skills necessary to make that happen.

Throughout 2025, you will be able to participate in a series of advocacy education opportunities that will prepare you to become a better dance advocate.

  • A brand-new, on-demand Dance Advocacy 101 webinar will provide you with the fundamentals to being an effective advocate for the ecosystem.
  • Our Advocating Beyond the First 100 Days webinar will deepen your understanding and prepare you to go before legislators to encourage positive change in our sector.
  • We are also designing tailored Advocacy Education Workshops to ignite local and state level representation from our community.
    • Our dream and intention is to facilitate these workshops across the country.
    • Organizations will bring us their advocacy needs, receive tailored programming at accessible rates, and build capacity for local/state-level action. The process includes a consulting session, workshop design, feedback, and final presentation.
    • If you are interested in bringing an Advocacy Education Workshop to your organization, please email advocacy@nulldanceusa.org.

The desired outcomes for this Strategic Reframing Process include updates to our:

  • Membership model — including updates to levels, dues, and benefits
  • Core service offerings — which may mean reduction or expansion of current offerings
  • Value proposition — defining our most meaningful impact in the field
  • Financial model — clarifying how Dance/USA sustains operations moving forward
  • Operational structure — including restructuring team roles to support this work
  • Code of care/accountability structure — creating clear sets of guidelines for remaining on a path of equitable service
