Directory of Not-for-Profit Dance Ensembles

About the Directory of Not-for-Profit Dance Ensembles

Created and maintained by Dance/USA, the Directory of Not-for-Profit Dance Ensembles is a listing of professional tax-exempt dance ensembles and fiscally sponsored dance artists based in the United States or a U.S. territory (the “Ensemble Directory”). The Ensemble Directory evolved out of Dance/USA’s former National Company Roster.

The Ensemble Directory was created through review of the following: the tax forms of organizations identified as dance or cultural/ethnic-related by the Internal Revenue Service; dance-related literature and other written materials; listings of fiscally sponsored dance artists and projects shared with Dance/USA by local arts service organizations and fiscal sponsors or contained on these organizations’ websites; discussions with dance makers; and through the self-identification of professional tax-exempt dance ensembles and fiscally sponsored dance artists to Dance/USA.

To be included in the Ensemble Directory, a dance ensemble must possess the following characteristics:

  • Have 501(c)(3) status or affiliation with a unit of a tribal government, be a fiscally sponsored ensemble, or produce dance works as a fiscally sponsored artist;
  • Pay the dancers that perform for the ensemble (if the ensemble identifies as pre-professional or semi-professional and/or works exclusively with students who are paying tuition fees, the ensemble is ineligible for inclusion in the Directory);
  • Be located in one of the 50 U.S. States, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory; and
  • Be currently active.
