A leader in the dance world, Harris Ferris has served as Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s (PBT) executive director since 2006. During his tenure, Ferris has worked to strengthen the company and expand its national and international profile. Under Ferris’ leadership, PBT has fortified its financial position and dramatically reduced debt while continuing to grow artistic and educational programming. In partnership with the artistic director, Ferris has curated a series of new productions that have elevated the company’s artistic profile. Driven by the growth of PBT School, Ferris spearheaded PBT’s campus expansion initiative, which established PBT’s first student residency, created the new Byham Center for Dance and launched the company’s ongoing campaign for endowment and innovation funding. A former dancer, Ferris’ career began in Buffalo, NY where he was both principal dancer and executive director of the Empire State Ballet. He went on to become managing director of Princeton American Repertory Ballet in New Jersey and executive director of the Nevada Ballet in Las Vegas, in each case strengthening touring, finances and artistic scope. A native of New Jersey, Ferris attended Bard College, holds a BA from SUNY Buffalo, and an MBA from Rutgers University. He is a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Non-profit Partnership Advisory Team and currently serves on the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Outside of ballet, his interests include ballroom dancing, show jumping, fox hunting, and downhill skiing.
