Washington, DC – Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, will honor local dance champions Robert and Katherine Goodale and Colleen Callahan-Russell at the 2014 Dance/USA Annual Conference this June in Minneapolis. The Goodales will receive the Dance/USA Champion Award and Callahan-Russell will receive the Special Citation: Inspiration Award.
As previously announced, Dance/USA will present Liz Lerman with the Dance/USA Honor Award and D. David Brown with the Ernie Award. Learn more about the 2014 Dance/USA Honorees here. “Bob, Kathie, and Colleen have played vital roles in nurturing and championing dance in the Twin Cities,” said Dance/USA Executive Director Amy Fitterer. “Their passion and generosity for dance and the performing arts are an inspiration to us all.”
The Dance/USA Champion Award will be given on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 7:30pm at the first Annual Conference Performance Showcase. The event will take place in the Goodale Theater at The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts in Minneapolis and will feature performances by the following local companies and artists: Shapiro & Smith Dance, Ragamala Dance, TU Dance, Morgan Thorson, James Sewell Ballet, Minnesota Dance Theatre, and Hijack.
This evening’s performances are the first in a series of four unique Performance Showcases featuring a wide range of dance artists from the Twin Cities. Dance/USA will present the Special Citation: Inspiration Award to Callahan on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the 2014 Opening Night Celebration, 6:30pm – 10:00pm, which kicks off the Dance/USA Annual Conference. The festivities will take place at the Nicollet Island Pavilion in Minneapolis and feature dinner, a site-specific performance by Twin Cities-based choreographer Vanessa Voskuil, and the celebration of Liz Lerman and D. Nominated and voted on by the 2014 Minneapolis Host Committee, the Dance/USA Champion Award and the Special Citation: Inspiration Award recognize individuals in the Annual Conference host city. The Champion Award is given to any organization, business, foundation, or individual in the Annual Conference host city whose achievements, leadership, and support have sustained and/or significantly advanced dance in their home community. The Special Citation Award was initiated this year to highlight an individual who has significantly prepared and empowered young dancers to become part of the dance community in Minnesota and beyond.
